Château Moulin Riche, Saint Julien, France, 2015
A wonderfully approachable Saint-Julien from a fabulous vintage and the very much in-form team behind Château Léoville-Poyferré. Château Moulin Riche is a beefy blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc ; well stuffed with fruit (plums, blackberries, raspberries, cherries), wet rocky earth and tobacco, it’s a classic Claret from first sniff to the long lingering finish. Receiving glowing reviews and matching scores of 91 points from the highly respected wine critics Neal Martin and Antonio Galloni, this is a great red to have in your arsenal.
Releasing a string of exceptional wines since 2000 under the watchful eye of Didier Cuvelier, Château Léoville-Poyferré is often lauded by the critics as being one of the most consistent producers in all of Bordeaux. In Neal Martin’s view, what they create is “wine for lovers of modern, stylish Claret… for the oenophile, not the profit-hunter”, i.e. great wine to drink rather than buying for investment purposes. This is true across the range. Once considered the second wine of Château Léoville-Poyferré, the Cuvelier family (with a little help from Michel Rolland) has elevated Château Moulin Riche into a great wine in its own right. Hailing from a 21 hectare plot a little further inland, this is now a serious red to be reckoned with.
