Boschkloof, Sons of Sugarland Syrah, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2020
This is an astonishingly pure expression of Syrah from Reenen Borman owing largely to the fact that the wine is whole bunch fermented and aged solely in cement for 11 months with no clue as to what an oak fudre or Demi-muid might look like.
The grapes are sourced from a single vineyard in Stellenbosch and picked entirely in one go. The nose is about as seductive and enticing as wine gets possessing an alluring perfume of ripe red cherry and purple plum complemented by fresh violet petals and black olive tapenade. Despite having never seen oak the wine is redolent with a gravitas and long textured finish the belies this. Proper stuff.
