Aristea Wines, Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2017
A deep, dark and brooding Cabernet Sauvignon. A wonderful, triumphant expression of varietal purity which is an opaque red in the glass, almost black towards the edge. Both the nose and the palate offer opulent, indulgent dollops of Black Forest gatteau with a harmonising savoury complement of cigar box and cinnamon on the finish.
The skins of the grapes are pressed with great care to ensure gentle extraction and to preserve the natural flavour of the juice. As with their Chardonnay the wine is aged in 2nd and 3rd fill French oak, as well as new. Exactly a third of the juice in each type of barrel which further demonstrates the commitment to producing a wine indicative of the fruit’s true character.
The full Aristea range was recently put through its paces by Decanter’s Bordeaux correspondent, Jane Anson, who certainly knows her Cabernet and she was effusive in her praise awarding it 95/100
