6 x Cantine San Marzano, Cinquanta Collezione, Rosso d’Italia, Italy, NV
This was the most impressive red wine I tried when judging The Wine Merchant Top 100 in April. Out of 120 wines tried personally that day that’s not too bad a recommendation and it was seconded by Phil Amps of Amps Wine Merchants. We decreed it was a 95 point wine and industry leading magazine Decanter can clearly see the wisdom of us independent wine merchants having awarded it a Gold Medal in their annual world wine awards which requires a score of at least 95/100.
But enough about medals and points! What is this wine that’s gotten me all aquiver and what does the bloody stuff taste like? Well, it’s a blend of Negroamaro & Primitvo, two grapes indigenous to Southern Italy, specifically the Puglia region. The perfume is dense and viscous with oodles of complexity which beguile the senses with the impression that you might be trying stewed cherry jam infused with cinnamon and nutmeg served from an artisan leather pouch at a market stall in Puglia’s equivalent of Shoreditch.
In short, it’s a wonderful, wonderful thing. Buy some but do it quickly before I drink it all.
