Rest assured that all wines in our range have received a full and thorough taste testing and are certified as fit for purpose…
Museum Wines was started in 2003 by Alex and Gretchen Boon, having sucessfully introduced wine shops at the very popular Museum Inn in Farnham and The King John Inn in Tollard Royal, the company needed to expand due to the high demand and an evident gap in the local market.
A new purpose built wine shop was created in what was a dilapidated barn. The renovation won LABC North Dorset’s award for ʻBest Change of Use of an Existing Building’ in 2014.
The shop has been beautifully designed with warm wood flooring and exposed brick walls. There’s even a cosy seating area and wood burner where customers can take refuge from the winter chill. During the summer the shop becomes a Wine Bar every Friday evening, offering a selection of wines by the glass at a fraction of pub prices. The wine list changes each week allowing customers to sample new wines we’ve discovered and enabling us to showcase our favourites.
We also host private tastings every couple of months, which have included tastings from Dorset based award winning Langham Wines, UK based distillery William Chase and Billecart-Salmon – one of the most prestigious champagne houses in the world.
The majority of the wines we stock are imported directly from the wineries or distilleries. This allows us to offer our customers wines which represent excellent value for money on wines which aren’t readily available throughout the UK. We like to say we can compete on price with wine warehouses whilst delivering the level of service you expect from a small independent business.
In March 2015, Alex and Gretchen asked Daniel Grigg to run the company on their behalf. They had a new project which needed their undivided attention, 10 Castle Street opened in December later that year. Daniel achieved a distinction in the WSET Level 3 Advanced Certificate in Wine Tasting and Knowledge whilst working for Majestic Wine.
In October 2017 Daniel was made Managing Director of Museum Wines and now runs all aspects of the business, from loading the van for deliveries to scouring the globe for your new favourite wine… available exclusively from us, of course.
Corey Evans joined the Museum Wines team in February 2018 to help with the demands of a growing business. Corey joined us from Chewton Glen where he worked as a sommelier, prior to that he worked at St Swithun’s Wine Shippers in London.
Be sure to put them to the test when you visit our shop!
What We Do
Museum Wines hosts private wine tastings every couple of months, which have included tastings from Dorset based award winning Langham Wines, UK based distillery William Chase and Billecart-Salmon - one of the most prestigious champagne houses in the world.
Our love for South Africa is reflected in our range. Holden Manz has been a favourite for many years and was joined by Inverroche Fynbos Gins in October 2015 when we introduced this truly unique product to the UK market for the first time.
Our South African portfolio has continued to grow with the addition of wines from Moreson and Haut Espoir alongside Witkasteel and Rooikasteel, two own label wines within our Castle Street range. Keep an eye out for new additions with Aristea from Stellenbosch and Cape Town distillery A Mari on their way.
With more than 300 wines to choose from including entry level every day wines offering remarkable value, classics from Montrachet, Pauillac and Montalcino, as well a range of craft spirits which boasts more than 50 different Gins there's something for every enthusiast of indulgence. Local delicacies you can find here include Conker Dorset Gin, Black Cow vodka from Beaminster and Dorset brewed beers from Cerne Abbas Brewery and Gyle 59.
